Separate
Even if you are sharing a space, it’s helpful to have separate workspaces that each person can call their own. Using furniture is a great way to separate a shared space. A peninsula or a small bookshelf between each workstation is a common solution. Alternatively, two separate desks on opposite walls of your room could be another solution.
In each work area, let each person pick his or her own office accessories. This will help each person stay organized and add personalization. If you’re concerned about the space looking cohesive, you’ll want to coordinate the cabinet materials, colors, and style.
But Equal… Or Maybe Not
Sometimes creating identical workstations isn’t ideal. This holds true if one person will only use the space occasionally, while the other will be there full-time. Use flexible storage to create a workstation for the part-time user. A drop-down tabletop is a great way to create a temporary desk area. Or consider dedicating a small area for this person’s work area.
Common Ground
Create an area that can be enjoyed by both of you. Adding a reading nook or sitting area can be good to give each of you a change of scenery. You should also be aware of where shared appliances and supplies are placed. Keep office supplies, the printer, and coffee maker in an area that both of you can easily access. If these items are not in a shared area, it can cause tension.
